Okay, okay, last time - promise:First: Call the little 'districts' / 'cities' what you want. Everyone here knows that people who live in those 'areas' refer to them as a city/their city. Personally, I see them all as districts of LA...but I'm often corrected.Second: Yes, many of the 'areas' I was referring to cannot afford what many of you can take for granted...that's a given with many other things as well. However, WiFi, as a community-based venture, was intended to reduce the costs that mainstream wireless network companies typically charge - out of greed and passing on Federal taxes/fees on to us, etc. I don't need to explain this...YOU are all the experts on this topic, not I.Third: With the proposal being regarded as a cash-hog? I've listened to you guys (silently) for a while now and I know that the cost of installing a site is a tiny fraction of what gets calculated in to a proposal such as this one. Aren't many of you involved in providing the Mayor, or other nitwits (sorry), decent and applicable numbers? Can't we (you) offer LA some guidance to make a relatively FREE network throughout the LA area? Please? And a lot of it can rely on big-biz donations, and Hollyweird influence, and generous folk who buy into the concept of community (districts/areas/whatever) systems! Just takes a bit of POSITIVE advertising... or maybe a bit (a lot) of reverse propaganda.Fourth: I admit, I'm still in the clouds with my ideas. Panos Krokos (Seattle Wireless 2001) got me all excited about WiFi, and now I see little, if any, change....just groups talking about it mostly. No offense - you guys are gurus and major players in your fields, and I'm sure you're making huge strides towards a connected planet...I'm done moaning. Thanks for the feedback. I could use a ride to the meeting - any offers? ;-) No car.Sincerely, Jay --- On Thu 09/20, Charles N Wyble < [EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote:From: Charles N Wyble [mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Thu, 20 Sep 2007 10:39:32 -0700Subject: [SOCALWUG] Re: LA WiFi Town Hall Meetings and Survey-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----Hash: SHA1Um. Who said it would only be downtown? I haven't seen that mentionedanywhere. If they are looking to generate revenue, then they would expand it tothe valley. Only having wifi down town doesn't make sense. Most of thepeople down there wouldn't want it or be able to pay for it.So while I certainly agree that the Valley is ignored to variousdegrees, it is certainly NOT IGNORED when it comes to revenuegeneration. Obviously. It is a massive source of revenue. So offeringwifi city wide is a no brainer. If its gotten to the stage of town hallmeetings, I'll guarantee you they have already ran the numbers andfigured out its a cash cow.- -CharlesPresident of Linux Users Group LAXhttp://jackshck.livejournal.comRichard wrote:> Sure Van Nuys is Los Angeles City, you know what Jason was getting at,> Jonathan.> > I answered their solicitation for comments and questioned motivation.> Projected revenue from advertising is probably their glitter and reaching> the masses to raise them up from the dust of being without connectivity is> the political poster.
