I think that you are mistaken. I have a befsr41. According to the support docs at linksys, it supports 1 ipsec connection, "connection (Meaning a client using software to dial into a VPN server) behind the router." In other words, it doesnt do a vpn tunnel itself, but will let you have one come through. BIG DIFFERENCE.

If you go into the "advanced" configuration tab of your befsr41, you will see "IPSEC pass through" enable/disable. Enabling this should let a vpn tunnel go through the router. You do need to be current on your firmware, which you should do anyhow, because of a security hole in older versions.

Linksys has a vpn router device, the BEFVP41. It has a coprocessor to support the encryption (encryption takes a bit of cpu). This has ipsec/vpn.

As far as the smc product, it looks to be about the same, in the faq:
"Currently the Barricade supports PPTP and IPSec pass-thru feature. You can connect multiple computers to the outside PPTP servers. You can also setup a PPTP server in your intranet. The IPSec pass-thru feature was added in recent firmware upgrades."

Again, in other words, it does not appear to set up/run a tunnel, but it will let it through. SMC does make the SMC7004WFW, which will run one.
