Hello Michael, The BEFSR41 supports a vpn passthrough so you must initiate the tunnel through vpn software installed or built into the computer behind the router. If you need to then trigger ports for your vpn client software or forward ports to your vpn server. By default pptp and ipsec vpn passthrough is enabled on the router. I am not familiar with the SMC router if it is a vpn endpoint router or just a standard router which supports a vpn passthrough similar to the Linksys BEFSR41.
