I got the impression smc like linksys will let it through, but it is not setting up a tunnel itself.

MS has vpn clients for pptp (point to point tunneling protocol). These allow individual hosts to connect to each other in an encrypted manner. I understand that this is part of win2k, and that there is downloadable
client software for win98, winme and others.

I am more familiar with vpn tunnels, where all traffic between two points is encrypted along the way, and spit out at the other side. E.g. you could have an entire subnet, when it connects to a another subnet on the other side of the internet, be encrypted between the two locales.

If you have the hardware, I would suggest getting two clients to talk to one another via pptp, then try and pass it through one router, then both.
