I have received several responses to the inquiry, and I will be getting back
to the folks personally this week.

I plan to keep the list informed of developments that relate to SOCALWUG.
The administrative "me too" kind of posts just serve to distract. Also,
some of these projects are work-related so should not be broadcast.

I will keep the list updated on a regular basis. Especially after budget
appropriation!

Thanks for asking!

As for your Q's:
LAN = local. In this case, indoors on a corporate network.
WAN = wide. In this case, outdoors for multiple sites.
Long-distance = 1 mile or more. Corporate and hobby projects.
Mostly focused on 802.11b standard hardware. Sometimes use the Mikrotik or
other WISP systems.

Why off-list? It would seem that this list is well-suited as the
development forum for projects like these. Probably most here are
interested in the proceedings even if they are not able to contribute.

Could you amplify a bit on some of these projects please? What
distinguishes a LAN from a WAN? What is "long distance"? Are you focussed
on open standards solutions like 802.11 or considering proprietary solutions
as well?
