Pings transfer  * VERY *  little data.

Does you wireless monitor report link status -
signal strength, data rate ??

As far as antennas go, if you have enough gain to 
 "see" them, it also provides the same gain so they
can "see" you.  6 db is 6db, Tx & Rx.
