I hope you guys can help. I have been attempting, for the last couple of weeks, to use the wiress AP's that they have set up at school. From what I am told, the AP are operated by Verizon. My current setup is a win98SE machine, and a choice of several different network cards. None of them work at school. I spoke to th IT person, who said that it doesn't appear that the machine is getting the IP info from the AP/DHCP. I ran winipcfg, and while at school, I often times can't release the IP, and when I attempt to renew the IP, I get, "Error DHCP server unavailable: Renewing IP" Also, alot of the times, the winipcfg program will stop responding, and then, all of a sudden, come back to life, and then I get the same error as before. And of course, it doesn't work. HOWEVER, if I attempt to release and/or renew the IP when I am at home, at Starbucks, or "Borrowing" someone elses AP, it works fine. I therefore tried one of the cards on a friends XP Pro machine, and he said he was able to get an IP, but for some reason, he didn't want to talk much more about it (WEIRD) Any one know what the problem is. Is it that the Verizon equipment doesn't like win98/win98SE. Should I upgrade the winipcfg program somehow, or use something else. I thought maybe I messed up when I registered the card with school, but, I have checked with them, and the MAC address (I guess they are using MAC address filtering) was correct in their system. Besides, I don't think they would input it incorrectly for 2 different cards. I guess it is possible though. So, anyone got any ideas.
