Hi Brian, If you are using an unsecured network, it is recommended that you have a firewall like Zone Alarm running on your laptop. It takes longer to boot up and is a little slower but at least you have protected your laptop from local wifi network hacks.
At a Microsoft security lab day recently they were saying that even in a corporate network this is a very good idea.
