Hi David. FYI, we founded www.socalfreenet.org with the intention that it
would serve as a resource for *all* of Southern CA. Although our activities
have been primarily based in San Diego, we'd love to keep working with our
fellow wifi enthusiasts north of us (several folks up your way are already
involved - special thanks to Frank and Gerry for their support!). Note that
we are NOT trying in any way to replace existing wireless user group
activities, but rather provide a framework for people who are particularly
interested in building community wireless.

We think it makes a lot of sense to leverage and improve our infrastructure
(web site, contacts), knowledge (best practices, experience) and contacts
(press, vendors). We're also in the process of setting ourselves up as a
501(c)(3) organization so we can receive tax deductible donations and
benefit from the many advantages that brings.

Btw, we have some potential projects to add to your great locations - e.g.
we're currently working with a property owner with property in San Diego,
Orange County and LA (http://socalfreenet.org/node/view/291).

If this is interesting to you, please feel free to contact us - we'd be
happy to work together to get one of your locations below online. We're
also looking for potential non-profit board members, as well as local
organizers (such as yourself, hint hint), so anyone please contact us if
you're interested.

Btw, yesterday we added another node to our largest Golden Hill deployment.
Read about it, including equipment we used:
http://socalfreenet.org/node/view/308.

Regardless of how you decide to proceed, good luck with your projects and be
sure to ask if you need any help!

cheers, michael

Subject: [SOCALWUG] Orange County Free Net

I'm trying to find out if there is an existing Orange County based "free
network" or any interest in creating one? I know of the socalfreenet.org
project (San Diego) and the LAAWRN (Los Angeles) but so far I can not find
anything for Orange County. I already have a few key rooftop locations
around Orange County, which are:

- A 4 story building in Santa Ana near 1st and Main that can see everything
from Santa Ana to Newport Beach to the Mountains. Basically if you can see
the Ronald Reagan Federal bldg. (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=126403)
I can probably see you.
- Possibly *some* rooftop access at a two story office building right next
to the El Toro Y As well as the following less notable locations:
- a bi-level complex in Stanton at Beach blvd and Cerritos Ave.
- a 2nd level condo near IVC

I have a few misc. ideas/projects for the network also but I'll get into
those later, I just want to get an idea of the level of interest first...
Anyway, if there is anyone interested in a project like this, we could start
with people just getting back to me with their contact info and/or address
and description of their location.
