Are you familiar with the old joke about the engineer, the mathematician and the economist stranded on a desert island with nothing but tinned food, and no tin opener?
If not, the punchline from the economist is "we can open the tins easily! Let's assume we have a tin opener ..."
I can see where that sort of thinking could be difficult for a mathematician to deal with ...
