You know, as an AMERICAN, this so-called "friendly discussion" is annoying and at least slightly offensive.
You fail to realize that there are over 20 other countries that have just as much right to the term "American" as yours does. People should be named after the country, not the entire continent. The Germans might have a beef if the French call themselves "European" and expects no one else in Europe to use that term.
Yank has been used as a degoratory term, I believe it started that way.
That's interesting. I never made the association with "Yanking".
The fact is Americans are from the United States.
I know of 300 million people who disagree with you. :-)
United Statesians or USians (aside from being a stupid name)
It's only stupid because it's not caught up yet. I'm sure people thought "Canadian" was stupid for a while, or "Washingtonian".
FYI, in Spanish you are a Estadounidiense.
could be from any of the number of nations with "United States" or some form of that term in their title.
Ok, USAian then. Or perhaps "Usamerican" ?
The point is, there is more than one "United States" there is more than one "America".
I'm glad you realize that you're not the only one with rights to the term "American".
Please do not presume to tell me what I should refer to my own nationality as.
Okay, from now on, I'd like you to refer to me as an American because I was born in Venezuela and hold citizenship there.
Cheers, Daniel.
