Ooops, that last should have been:

* My dad's dad's mom's surname is Perez.
* My mom's dad's mom's surname is Marchan.

It's easier to understand if you see it recursively.

Dad last-names:  A B C D E
Mom last-names:  F G H I J

Mix these, going dad-mom-dad-mom-...

Son last-names: A F B G C H D I E J ...

You get it.

So is the Spanish naming system patrilineal or matrilineal? I mean it looks like both but would you normally end with the father's surname or the mother's?

FWIW, I've always thought that matrilineal made more sense. After all, it's generally pretty obvious who the mother is but as to the father...?
