Ooops, that last should have been:
* My dad's dad's mom's surname is Perez. * My mom's dad's mom's surname is Marchan.
It's easier to understand if you see it recursively.
Dad last-names: A B C D E Mom last-names: F G H I J
Mix these, going dad-mom-dad-mom-...
Son last-names: A F B G C H D I E J ...
You get it.

FWIW, I've always thought that matrilineal made more sense. After all, it's generally pretty obvious who the mother is but as to the father...?
