As everyone else has said, you should consider a live CD. Mepis is probably the best. I can mail you a CD for free if you would like to give me your PO Box. Please understand that everything you put on this list is public, so don't put any information here that you don't want to be googleable.
I would also suggest that you get a flash drive. If you store your data (letters, spreadsheets, etc.) on a flashdrive, and carry a live CD with you, you basically can turn anyone's computer into YOUR computer, without a trace. You won't harm their hard drive. You won't leave any data on their machines. You simply put the live CD into the CD ROM, reboot, as soon as the rebooting process starts, attach your USB flashdrive to the machine, and BOOM! you have your very own Linux computer ANY WHERE YOU GO. It's sooooo cool. You would want to warn your friends that their computers will LOOK different just for the period of time that you are on those computers, but their computers will not be changed at all. When you are done, just hit reboot, and immediately pull of the flashdrive and pull the CD out of the CD ROM, and BOOM, the friend's computer returns to its prior state.
