I may end up replacing Fedora with Mepis on the other side of this
dual-boot box. As it is, I have no connectivity in Linux, but Madwifi
should work for the card in this machine (Atheros chipset).

Looks interesting vis-a-vis the low memory I have installed (it's all I
can put on it), but it doesn't address the chicken/egg, horse/cart
Internet situation. Mepis looks like it should work better on that score.
