I realized that about a minute after I sent that email. Felt like an idiot a bit.
- use the original 2.6.39 CAN modules from your 2.6.39-2.el5.elrepo-i686
- build the stuff from socketcan/trunk/can-utils
Exactly what I ended up doing, plus installing the latest version of iproute2 so that we could run :

ip link set can0 up type can bitrate 250000

If you have a suggestion for a way I could use the iproute2 that's part of the standard kernel but accomplish the same goal, you would make me very happy!
