FreeBSD-based; actually, thinking about it - since m0n0wall prints to the console while booting, even if fastboot=on you'll still usually see some output if the cable is wired correctly (readable if the speed is correct, garbled otherwise - possible exception being if one side is set to 115200 and the other isn't).
