Just for the record: if you look at Lilo's 2ST BL as no more than an extension to the PBR code, that is. Functionally, GRUB's and OpenBSDs fs awareness + interactive shell add a true "stage" to the boot process. But more important, and of possible interest to Soekris/CF users: I keep forgetting to mention that Lilo's weakness is also its strength: if the specified kernel is still there and intact, Lilo will load and boot it, no matter what state the fs is in. Offering you at least a remote chance to fix the errors. If you're paranoid about CF errors messing up the fs, that should be a nice thing to know (and if the CF errors mess up your kernels, not boot loader can help you). If I'm right, that's exactly how this discussion started.
