"openssl speed" showed no difference, but "openssl aes" showed
significant progress.

3des went about 4mbps faster, aes-256 went about 20mbps faster

Check your sysctl(8) / sysctl.conf(5):

# sysctl kern.usercrypto=1
kern.usercrypto: 0 -> 1
