I don't recall ever saying that CF was immaculate. I've had a hard disk
fail three days after installation. Does that mean that ALL hard drives
are untrustworthy?

What I say is that CF is tarred by a very old brush. Early in the day
flash technology was <very> limited. There was no wear levelling and
the cell process was nowhere near as well developed as it is today.

Your experience is unfortunate but there is no need to be bitter about
it when the overall failure rate is very low. Not zero, just very low.
Show me an IC with a zero failure rate over millions of units shipped
can you? Any IC?
