Bill & Kim, thanks for the feedback.

still I am not able to boot after using the geometry that net4521 reports. When I use these parameters with fdisk, I get a warning to the effect that the Dos compatibility flag is being set.

Expert command (m for help): c
Number of cylinders (1-1048576, default 1018): 971

Expert command (m for help): h
Number of heads (1-256, default 124): 128

Expert command (m for help): s
Number of sectors (1-63, default 62): 63
Warning: setting sector offset for DOS compatiblity

I don't exactly know what that means but I don't like the sound of that! Especially since I am not using a fat file system. Further, when the 4521 boots with an install on top of these settings I see no grub messages, things just appear to freeze right off the bat.

By the way I finally caved and downloaded Voyage linux, and tried their menu driven installer. Followed their instructions, regarding partitioning and formatting. I get the same boot issues: when using the 4521 detected geometry an imediate crash and when using the default fdisk geometry: grub loading stage 1.5 read error.

Also, I notice that with the 4521 geometry reports the drive size as  4009M while 4521 bios reports 3915M.  I am not sure if I should be very concerned over this. however it seems that they both can't be correct.

Hi, I just got a new 4G CF card and am trying to get my net4521 up and
running. I specifically would like to put ubuntu on it, with a
debootstrap cross install via my laptop. Its has been a while since I
played with this board and I seem to have misplaced all of the
documentation. As such there a few things I am not quite sure of:

1) net4521 bios reports a different geometry than fdisk on the laptop.
net4521: 971 c 128 h 63 s
laptop: 1018 c 124 h 62 s
Is this an issue when partitioning/ cross installing?

Yes (or at least: possibly) if you are planning to use GRUB. See
http://wiki.soekris.info/What_is_this_disk_geometry_thing

2) regarding the partitioning, is a Fat16/32 file system required?

3) after the debootsrap install to cf on laptop, chroot into the new
install, and mounting proc and sys, issuing a ls /dev/ reveals there are
no hard drives(/dev/hd*, /dev/sd*). Is that a problem? Would I then have
to run MAKEDEV? or should I just leave well enough alone?

See
http://wiki.soekris.info/Installing_Ubuntu_7.04_Server_via_debootstrap

4) I am seeing grub errors most recently. Grub loading stage2 read
error. Can anyone advise as to the correct way to cross install grub for
the net4521?

Get the disk geometry right is the first thing that comes to mind (the
link above).

Bill

I am pretty sure what I'm doing wrong is related to one or all of the 4
above, any clarification for my confused mind is greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance
Burlen
