I can't give you any advice about GRUB, I never use it, only temporarily against my will after a fresh and unflexible Ubuntu installation. However, if you switch to Lilo you stand a considerable chance at being able to boot without a single problem. There's just one detail you should know about: if you want to run lilo with the '-C' (chroot) option, make sure that versions on both sides match.
