OK, that's probably the best solution, thanks.

So after studying the data sheet of the serial Crystalfontz displays
it seems that I can just write to the serial port that the display is
connected to and it will show the letters.  So no special driver is
needed, right?  Is that true for all (most) of these things?  That
almost sounds too easy to be true.
