New customer, new to list.

Very happy with the new case with the add-in card slot, the new net5501, and
the web site.

Information offered here is in the hope it helps someone else. All units
described are
 comBIOS ver 1.33 20070103
OS in all descriptions: FreeBSD 6.2 RELEASE #8

I'm seeing similar problems of only being able to detect SanDisk media, which
I've solved by switching to SanDisk media as suggested.
The change seems to have happened between

  S/N 158352 2/20/2008
On which I based my production template as an initial purchase :-) and

 and

  S/N 161252 3/14/2008
  S/N 161253 3/14/2008

But given inconsistencies I've seen just today between brands of CF media I
have laying around (with very low milage) under an arguably non-sceintifc test
I'm not sure I blame the Soekris hardware entirely, other than the change in
behavior itself.

Now maybe I'm missing something obvious but I'm confused how one brand of
media can be detected as Pri Master (SanDisk) and the Fry's house brand (?)
"A-Data" can be detected as Pri Slave and no changes to the BIOS have been made.

It's as if there's a cable-select issue going on where you cannot know in
advance where the disk will show up, except by brand. (A somewhat
non-deterministic way of cable select I'd say.)

It's also interesting to me that S/N 158352 will detect the "A-Data" disk as

Pri Master Kotsgji xxm2.3.0 LBA Xlt 761-128-63 2097 Mbyte

But only if

Hitachi XXM 2.3.0 LBA 978-8-32 125 Mbyte (for instance) (detected as Pri
Master on its own)

is connected simutaneously to the on-board laptop IDE connector via an Addonics
CF adapter card.

On its own, the same disk in the on-board CF slot is detected as

Pri Slv CF 2GB LBA Xlt 983-64-63 1982 Mbyte

and is not detected at all on either system using the Addonics CF adapter on the
laptop channel by itself.

(I'm only using 1 CF disk in the on-board slot for production.)

Hope this helps somebody. If you want more comparison, ask before Monday, all 3
of these plan to ship to customers then. :-)
