With OpenBSD, and using cu(1) for monitoring the client, I get weird characters like these at this point, even if both systems are otherwise set up correctly. And since everything else works well, I just ignore these. With both Debian and OpenBSD (on any side of the serial cable) I need to press Enter at the monitor once to get the login prompt. I don't know what causes this, but I can live with it.
