It would really only be feasible with the introduction of a new
processor. sticking with the intel arch you can do 2Gb/s on a core solo
or an intel atom but those motherboards will be substantially more
complex which adds cost especially in low volume.

on the long lived intel embedded side my employeer is still using 600mhz
celeron m cpus and intel 910gme in a low end 4xgbe boxes and probably
will be for another year or two.

soren has acheived one particular combination of
value/performance/simplicity which resonates quite well with the needs
of a number of potential users (myself included) but it's not the only
value mix out there. I think it would be great to see something built on
intel 80579 now that they have a full SOC that will likely be around for
a while, on the other hand working with a 1088 pin package instead of a
481pin package has got to be a little challenging down here at the low end.
