Use a modelk that ISPs use. It gives you garantees that has been tested.

You have to ensure that is supports bridged mode so that you use soekris as a 
router (this is not true for all ISP modems at least in Portugal).

We had good experiences with Huawei MT882 for POTS (can't be bought unless an 
ISP sells it) and Speedtoch 510i / 545i for ISDN.
