I can second the recommendation for the S519. I'm using one in a net5501 
with the Leaf/Bering linux. I haven't noticed any problems due to heat, 
but the rest of my the net5501 case is empty (no disk).


This is in the US with AT&T residential DSL (3.0Mbps / 384Kbps).
I followed the instructions on 
http://wiki.sangoma.com/wanpipe-linux-adsl2-support to set up PPPoE 
bridging, and then the PPPoe instructions for Leaf's debian-like network 
setup just worked.

I think the sangoma cards are so trouble-free to set up because they're 
pretty much indistinguishable (as far as software) from a outboard dsl 
modem connected by ethernet to a port - except that there's one less case,
power brick, and network cable.
