I'd recommend updating the BIOS to the latest version before changing the
serial port speed.
Nasty BIOS bugs in the past have set the speed to a rare 28800 (from memory)
when you try to change it.
As not many comm programs can do 28800 this can be hard to recover from.

If you want a good Windows terminal program that does SSH and serial comms,
try PuTTY which you can get from:
