You don't, strictly speaking, need the serial console. I recently installed FreeBSD 8.0 on a 4801. I had it connected via serial to my laptop, to see the messages if something went wrong, but I never actually used the serial connection. I netbooted the box and then ssh'ed in. For this to work you need to set up /etc/ssh/sshd_config in your exported root filesytem to allow root logins.
