A few months ago I bought and started to install a Soekris 4521 as an internet gateway here on my home network. Mostly, this was inspired by Carla Schroeder's online articles and the O'Reilly book "Linux Networking Cookbook".
As she had already worked through the details of setting this up, I thought I'd just follow along with the hardware and software she used. This did not go as smoothly as I expected for the following 3 reasons: 1) My own personal trouble figuring out that the Soekris 4500 User Manual (http://www.soekris.com/...) is where I would find the details of dealing with the 4521. 2) A ?bug? in the Soekris V1.33 BIOS software that ignores the first of 4 possible boot devices. Normally, you would specify the boot device as: set BootDevice=80 80 80 80 However, this caused the PXE boot sequence (which hangs). However, trying the boot 80 caused the device to boot from my SanDisk 4Gb compact flash. I worked around the problem by setting: set BootDevice=80 80 80 80 3) Regardless of my efforts at trying to get Pyramid linux to boot, including efforts to set the baud rate of the device as per related info, I got no response at the serial port. Switching over to voyage linux (http://linux.voyage.hk) and the corresponding detailed instructions enabled me to bring up the Soekris 4251 under linux and set it up as an internet gateway in about an hour. Hopefully, Soekris will put a link to voyage linux on their web page (and strongly recommend it), and fix/document the problem with the boot sequence under their 1.33 BIOS, to avoid this future mess for others. - Mike _______________________________________________ Soekris-tech mailing list [email protected] http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
