Hi folks,
When reading posts about setting up a Soekris using a compact flash, I
see a lot of people saying that a compact flash cannot withstand a lot
of writing before failing.

1.) Is that true? How much is "a lot" of writing? (My 4501 is for my
tiny, home network)

2.) How do you set up an OS (either OBSD or FBSD) to NOT write to a CF???

3.) If you set it up to not write to your CF, how does your Soekris
manage to create log files???
I picked up a used 4801 a while ago, loaded a full install of openbsd
on it to test just exactly that. I didn't care if it fried the card
in a month or 2, or 6. It's been running now for over a year with no
problems at all. I've used it exactly the same way I would if it had a
disk in it. I'm not using any ramdisk trickery at all. It's completely
stock.

The only real benefit to a read-only filesystem is immediate recovery
after power outage.

I have 3 transcend 266x 4gig CF that I have been running centos on for about 3
years, with no
special tricks on 2-5501s and an acrosser. YMMV.
