May I recommend Shorewall. In particular Shorewall Lite, which does not require Perl on the Soekris box itself.
I have several super tiny builds of Busybox/Uclibc machines running with Shorewall and they are rock solid and easy to configure. Only thing is that Iproute2 does not compile very well against Uclibc, so some of the load balancing features are missing.
