I assume that a read-only mounted CF is more reliable than a HD, so
booting from CF would make it more reliable.

I have a similar setup, with NanoBSD (and a few packages) installed on
the CF and data directories mounted from HD (read-write).
If^WWhen the HD fails I want to be able to replace the HD, and maybe
restore some data from backup; but I will not have to reinstall and
configure the whole OS.
