I don't think read/write and idle power specifications are going to be
all that useful. These specifications are related to average demand
not peak demand. The question that needs to be answered is, will the
power supply be able to supply the peak (instantaneous) current
demands of the hard drive. If it can't and goes into current limiting,
a supply output will drop (go out of regulation) and continued
operation of the net5501 and hard drive is no longer guaranteed.

Hard drive manufactures supply very detailed data on their drives in
OEM specifications that are roughly 300 pages long. In these documents
are specifications of the worst-case (maximum) current demand for each
supply (usually just +5 and +12). This is the information one needs to
understand the actual power supply requirements.

At this time the only manufacture who makes the OEM specification
available on their website is Hitachi. Several years ago, I called
Western Digital and requested a paper copy of an OEM specification.
But as far as I can tell WD does not supply this on their website. I
have found Samsung to be nearly completely opaque. When I call Samsung
support (United States), the only people I was able to speak with had
no technical knowledge of their products. I am sure that Samsung has
offices that work with industrial customers, but I have not succeeded
in contacting them.

One possible solution would be to find a Hitachi drive with similar
specification to the HD204UI. This would give some idea of the current
requirements. A similar Hitachi product from the 5K3000 series is the
HDS5C3020ALA632. The OEM specification for this drive can be found at:

http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/3B466EACAD15AD4E8825781D00360E58/$file/DS5K3000-2TB_CS5K2000_OEM_manual_1.0.pdf

I have a Samsung HD204UI here. It is a wonderful drive with very low
average power requirements. If it is useful I could make some supply
current measurements. This would be done with an oscilloscope and
would show the peak currents when the drive was performing various
operations.

That it is easier to go to the trouble to measure this rather then get
the information from the manufacturer makes me wonder why they call
this the "information age". Part of this problem may be that there are
many individuals who buy hard drives and manufactures need to isolate
their industrial support people from the high volume of requests for
information from individuals.
