I've seen a lot wierder things when it comes to consumer grade
memory products. A lot wierder things.

Or with a little bit more details:
The initialization procedure for the controllers is quite complex.
It contains many steps that take time. In order to allow a shorter
"startup time" i could imagine that a manufacturer uses a hack to allow
reading the first few kB before the whole card is ready to be used.
This would work in the most important case (using the card as a FAT formated
storage device for cameras and such), but would fail in the case you are
using it.

If this is an issue and you want to use always the same card, then you should
go for industrial grade products with a controlled BOM. But they cost a lot
more and usually are quite a bit smaller. If using different cards isnt a
problem, just get a few and try which of those work and which don't.
