I keep staring at an open Net6501 and case on my desk and looking at the
2.5" drive mounting bracket and asking "why is that drive mounting
bracket needed at all?"

It strikes me that 4 holes, properly positioned on the case lid or case
base (or both) could be used to mount a 2.5" drive without the need for
that drive bracket.

I have some Antec cases that do this and that use a thin sheet of
fiberboard material to go between the drive and the case to give some
mechanical/audio isolation.

I haven't measured but my eyeball suggests that there perhaps is barely
enough space that if the drive were mounted to the lid that there would
be enough clearance to have a PCIe card in the slot.

In any event, if I had the right tools I'd try drilling some holes to
mount a 2.5" drive directly to the case top and bottom without aid of
the drive mounting bracket.

Even without the holes I could use a block of very soft material (such
as balsa wood or childrens' toy putty) the dimensions of a drive, and
maybe a couple of mm thicker, to test whether a drive would avoid
hitting the PCIe card and leave some air gap.
