I haven't yet gotten around to getting a net6501, currently in the
middle of 400 other projects, perhaps in a month or so :)

Anyhow, the basic symptoms you are describing lead me to think your
linux distribution is not using serial console correctly (either, wrong
default port, speed, or even stop bits or parity or flow control, or
something strange like that).

If you are using a grub you can "break" into, I'd recommend editing the
"append" line for your default kernel, and setting something like:-

console=tty0 console=ttyS0,19200n8

Depending on the kernel variety and compile options you might need to
adjust those a tad. And that's based off the default com port speed
I've seen on the 4801's and 5501's I have cluttering up the place here,
so YMMV.

The other quick-test option is once that's switched over, if the distro
is supposed to be serial-ready, try setting your terminal software to
9600n8 (the semi-default for the linux kernel on a serial port).

The first board might have incorrect (for you) boot sequence settings,
the Soekris wiki does list a few options to resolve that IIRC (which I
probably don't *grin* I just know the boot options settings I want off
by heart, and if I don't do them frequently, just looking at the boot
settings and I got "oh right, it's 80 81 FE FF" or whatever I want :)

In terms of the "Ready" light never going ON, this is fairly normal at
first I've found for most Soekrii (it just feels better to use that term
than Soekrises *grin*), after a few linux kernel updates it often starts
working. If this truly bothers you, once you have a system you can
connect into (ssh/proper serial terminal/etc), go check to see if
they've included the controls for the GPIO in to the kernel, most of the
extra Soekris platform stuff works via GPIO, and last I checked the
normal desktop hardware does not include a "READY" light :)
