Thanks, Per, Paul, Stewart and Jordan. I got the update kernel/initrd from wheezy and muddled through with that.
One thing that slowed me down further was that when doing an install over an existing debian setup, the installer could not find the harddrives (2 CF on an Addonics card). The work-around for that was to clear both with OpenBSD first.
