Thanks a lot for that! I'll have a closer look at Snort and also check out 
Argus.

Yes, I think you might be right - something along those lines really doesn't 
seem to be available as an open-source project.
When I was searching for Packeteer, I found the website http://www.bluecoat.com/
They offer all kinds of appliances / solutions which would do what I want, but 
are all proprietery and probably way too expensive for my purposes. Yes, they 
do offer a "cloud service" which integrates into an existing network 
infrastructure. However, I'm pretty sure this would inevitably mean sending all 
of my internet traffic through Bluecoat's servers - which is definitely not 
what I want! :-) I was hoping for a centralized way of storing and analyzing my 
network traffic - but I'm certainly not beaming all that traffic into some 
'cloud' :-)
Thanks a lot for all the pointers though, I'm sure many of them will prove to 
be very useful to me!
