Hi Chris, first off, thanks a lot for your reply! > If you want to store and analyse the actual content, snort might meet your > needs. Argus is also capable of capturing a portion of each packet for > later analysis.
Thanks a lot for that! I'll have a closer look at Snort and also check out Argus. > > If you just want to know who communicated with who, pmacct and pmgraph > might be useful. These also sound extremely helpful, many thanks! > > In general what you're looking for might be in the domain of expensive > proprietary bandwidth management tools such as Packeteer. Yes, I think you might be right - something along those lines really doesn't seem to be available as an open-source project. When I was searching for Packeteer, I found the website http://www.bluecoat.com/ They offer all kinds of appliances / solutions which would do what I want, but are all proprietery and probably way too expensive for my purposes. Yes, they do offer a "cloud service" which integrates into an existing network infrastructure. However, I'm pretty sure this would inevitably mean sending all of my internet traffic through Bluecoat's servers - which is definitely not what I want! :-) I was hoping for a centralized way of storing and analyzing my network traffic - but I'm certainly not beaming all that traffic into some 'cloud' :-) Thanks a lot for all the pointers though, I'm sure many of them will prove to be very useful to me!
