There are several solutions or better methods out there.

What is about Nagios? Did you played with the idea to have a quick look over or
dedicated view on?

Or you use TCPDUMP and store the files for later over looking for a dedicated
view on the packets flow!

At least you can use the shark (wireshark) and store the whole network traffic
over a mirrored switch port!
