I think I have had about 25-30 net6501 during the last 4 years. About 10 of
those where from the first time of life, with the very simple heatsink that
where only a black plate.
I have had massive issues with them failing, so we have chosen to abandon
Soekris since. I have also seen the same error on never models with a bit more
advanced heatsink that is not black but plain metal.

There is also a model with a much larger heatsink with holes in the plate. I
have not seen any errors on them though.

And the error is normally the same, where the error led stays red, and it does
not boot. And sometimes they get back to life, after a long time off.
There is normally no output to console port, but can press +++ and then get a
response. Looks like it somehow fails to boot the cpu.

Regards Martin

I have a net6501 which was supplied with the original heatsink. After all the
reports of failing net6501's, I began to develop some fear for its life,
especially since it is suggested the failures are related to overheating and in
particular this older type of heatsink. I emailed Soekris with the question
whether it would be wise to replace that heatsink. I can't recall whether that
question was answered, but I did get me a new and much improved heatsink. It
reduced temperature with in between to 8 and 10 degrees. If it is indeed a heat
related problem, it might be a worthwhile preventive measure (for those still
in the position to take preventive action).

Perhaps, those with a failed net6501 can report the type of heatsink installed
(and perhaps additional cooling) and year/month of purchase?
That could give some insight in the problem and if it is related to life-span,
heat, or just a batch. Depending on the results that could ease the mind of
(some of the) current and future owners and allow for others to take preventive
measures (if possible).

btw. mine is still running fine, though I hardly use it as intensive as some of
you here
