I use the Weller WLC-100 cheap soldering station with a .03 conical tip. It has
an uncalibrated heat control. I also use solder paste available at:
http://www.zianet.com/erg/
With this stuff you apply it to the pads if not too small. Or, if pads are very
close (ad9850/1 ICs) lay some across all of the pads. Works as discussed in the
Softrock 40 Yahoo group. I use Radio Shack .015 2% silver solder. Get two roles
since RS will be dumping components according to rumors.
Use the RS solder to touch-up anything that looks suspicious. As mentioned,
drag the iron from the pin, where it touches the pad toward the "outside edge"
of the pad for touch-up. I am 68 years old and do not have a problem with this
technique. I may get the cup warmenr from Walmart (pre-heater) and a cheap
hobbyist heat (embossing) device, if I can find one, to try on the next project.

I've benn having problems soldering surface mount chips, like the FET
SOIC16 switch ICs. Often, when I power up, the chips become really hot
and simply don't work. I was wondering if you guys can give me advice
for this. I don't apply the iron for too long, but still it is likely
that I'm overheating the ICs.
I've been thinking about buying a weller WESD51 soldering iron station,
which has a temperature control knob 350F to 850F. Do you know any
recommended temperatures or procedures? Are there any special features
on soldering irons I should look for?
