Hi,
The units I played with used a grounded gate u310 FET with feedback cap between source and drain. One end of the coax connected to the source while the other end had varcator diodes to tune the line. I was able to make a wide band oscillator with the right diodes. This is also common for UHF oscillators with strip line on a pc board. I used semiridged teflon line about 1/8 inch od.  gfz

I have seen numerous ideas along the lines of a coax resonator.  In the spiral coil I have used 10 and 11 meter 1/4 wavelengths of wire rolled into a spiral and it is the only coil I have seen the actually will resonate on the 1/4 wave principle.  I have found that the input is around 140 ohms for a resonator made out of a spiral and so a little capacitance can pull it down frequency a bit to make a vfo coil in the 1/4 wave band.
