Neither do I consider the 1496 obsolete. It does the applications it was 
conceived for very well indeed. Balanced modulator, video mixer, phase 
shifter, just to name a few...

Have you already considered 7360's or 6AR8's as demodulators?

I agree. One of the simplest solutions I once proposed was using active 
filters using transistors in emitter follower configuration for band 
limiting, which only requires some additional tie points instead of a 
PCB in a homebrew direct conversion radio using tubes. Some other 
advisor said the contrary and "simplicity" won. But high fidelity QRM is 
  something I do not appreciate on 40 meters at night....
