One of the simplest solutions I once proposed was using active filters using transistors in emitter follower configuration for band limiting, which only requires some additional tie points instead of a PCB in a homebrew direct conversion radio using tubes. Some other advisor said the contrary and "simplicity" won. But high fidelity QRM is something I do not appreciate on 40 meters at night....
