Is that on -vo dfb or -vo dfb:mgatv?  You did define LOGFILE in
a sensible way, didn't you?

Hmm, I'm not sure if '-vo dfb' is compatible with these settings in
your directfbrc:

matrox-crtc2
matrox-tv-standard=pal
matrox-cable-type=scart-rgb

I tried commenting out these, but all seem to be needed in order to
get a composite sync signal.  It was also necessary to define
primary-layer=2, although according to dfbinfo, it should be
the FBDev Primary Layer on the FBDev Primary Screen (i.e.,
the 1st head and not 2nd head).

Did you try adding "set -x" to the beginning of the script? Then it
should display all commands as they are executed.
