this was on -vo dfb: I didn't change the bits about LOGFILE, and the
file was created successfully in /var/log

I've just noticed after reading through that the following lines appear:

[dfb] Using this layer for OSD:        Matrox CRTC2 Layer
[dfb] Using this layer for Video out:  FBDev Primary Layer

These should both say Matrox CRC2. I can't guess why running the
command in a shell script causes this change. OSD doesn't appear.
