I think more effective marketing campaigns could be achieved without spending any money.
For example: I sat at the Autodesk booth during Siggraph to see an hour long demonstration of working with Maya, wireless mocap, and asset management. In the end the MC put up a powerpoint slide with URLs to product feedback sites for both Maya and Max and hyped up the importance of sending in suggestions, bugs, and so on. Max wasn't even part of the demo yet got some voice, but Softimage was completely ignored. I don't think it takes any significant marketing dollars to make a URL for Softimage feedback and type it into a powerpoint slide with the other two giving it a fair share of the 60 seconds limelight. THIS is the kind of stuff people are complaining about because it's blatantly obvious and biased. I have 20 years of energy invested in Softimage. To witness that was blunt trauma. Autodesk's words claim to be behind Softimage, yet their actions tell a different story. It's not a money problem, it's common sense (or lack of). One area I would like to get feedback on is how do we get the right things happening on facebook? Advertising is way beyond our budgets in general and not very effective unless we have a very specific call to action (e.g. upgrades), as a result most advertsing is driven by sales promos. However I actually think there are better and more viral ways of getting the word out. Recently we have been having more success with SM. We have had a lot of success with our Softimage page (now at over 20,000) as well as the Digital Media page http://www.facebook.com/AutodeskDigitalMedia , which for the reasons described here, is becoming a bit of a second Softimage home. That's great to hear! I'd have to agree, SI is a fantastic and very complete solution for small to mid size shops. Hopefully, there is some targeted advertising in this area.
