I will try turning it off and see how it plays. Upon more investigation the problem seems related to working with f-cuves on a null which has several scene elements pose constrained. If I make a copy of the null I can tweak f-curves without problems and then copy the revised animation back onto the master animation null. Not terribly smooth workflow though.
