That's just the thing though, the groups are being used in an entirely
passive manner.  I do nothing at all to them, just use them as shape
instance sources or to read in transforms.

It's all working fine and everything hooks up in the correct manner every
time I reload.  But then if I want to create a new group in the scene, even
one entirely unrelated to everything else (i.e. create a null, hit ctrl-g)
- BOOM.
