I was mostly referring to softimages plugin system actually, trying to upgrade plugins inside of a workgroup in the middle of a large project with lots of users can be a pain, older scenes that had previously worked fine might break after updating, not to mention downgrading plugins again if you find that they broke something can cause headaches as well..
for that reason if you are working on several projects its usually best to have one workgroup per project, rather than one for the whole company.
